Is the UK issued passport safe?
Currently, the UK passport allows travellers from the UK to visit 173 countries around the world, visa free.
UK passports are tough and have built in electronic safety features. Unfortunately, this also makes them valuable to people that might make some money from doctoring and selling these passports in the black market.
Passport printers use special inks to make forgeries nearly impossible. There are visible inks, infrared inks that show until they are under infrared light, then they disappear, Ultraviolet inks that only show under ultraviolet light and more.
When will I need a new passport?
You should get one at least every 10 years as this is how long the passport is valid for. You can also get another one if your current one is in a state of disrepair or if it was lost or stolen (both of these need to be reported to the police.
What if I lose my passport abroad while on holiday?
Don’t panic, the British consulate or embassy in the country you are in, will be able to assist. Firstly you need to report your passport lost or stolen – to the local police. Then contact the embassy or consulate and ask them what procedure you should follow. If your flight is soon and you need to travel, they could issue an emergency passport or even some temporary travel documents that will allow you to get home.
