Halifax is a UK banking chain and a part of Bank of Scotland, itself a completely owned subordinate of Lloyds Banking Group. It is the biggest home mortgages and savings accounts provider in the United Kingdom.

It was named after town of Halifax, West Yorkshire was established in 1853 as a building society. In 1913, it had improved into UK’s widest building society and continued to expand and grow and keep this position in the UK until 1997 when it demutualized.

It became Halifax plc in 1997;it’s a public limited company that was a part of the FTSE 100 Index. In 2001, Halifax plc united with The Governor and Company of the Bank of Scotland, creating HBOS. In 2006, the HBOS Group Reorganisation Act 2006 officially transferred the assets and liabilities of the Halifax chain to Bank of Scotland that became a standard plc, with Halifax becoming a subsidiary of Bank of Scotland. The Court of Session approved a buyout of HBOS by Lloyds TSB on 12 January 2009, and on 19 January 2009 Bank of Scotland, with Halifax, officially became sector of Lloyds Banking Group.
