Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006

The Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 came into force on 1st October 2007, forbidding threats and other intimidating statements intended to stir up hatred against people because of their religious beliefs.

This bill was widely discussed and frequently condemned in the national media. However, it is felt by most who are active in faith and interfaith work that this bill will become a great help to creating a more tolerant and stable society.

Opposition to the bill centred on the possibility that it will stifle freedom of speech. This bill is intended to bring religious bigotry into line with similar acts regarding discrimination on the grounds of race, gender and disability.

Further information on the bill can be found at the Home Office and legal advice on racially or religiously motivated hate crime can be sought from the Equality and Human Rights Commission

"Preventing Extremism Together"

A major consultation was undertaken by the Home Office in 2005 called “Preventing Extremism Together”. It sought views on how the Government and communities can work together to prevent extremism. The conclusions from the consultation can be viewed on the Home Office pages.
